What Is A Home Alarm System?

A home alarm system is an electronic device that alerts the homeowner and alerts a third party monitoring station if there is trouble at your home. A home alarm system can protect your home against burglaries, fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, flood, medical emergencies, and low temperatures. The alarm system uses “sensors” placed around the home to notify the homeowner of the trouble. If the sensors are triggered the alarm’s Control Panel will sound a siren and send a signal to the monitoring station. The monitoring station will then contact the proper authority whether it be police, fire, or medical personnel.

A typical home alarm system will have “sensors” around the house on doors and windows and may use other devices like a motion sensor or a glass break detector to protect against intrusions. There are alsohome alarm system equipment devices such as smoke/heat sensors and CO sensors that can send an alert when there is a fire or carbon monoxide gas in the home.

There are two types of home alarm systems, the wireless home alarm system and the hard wired home alarm system. Wireless home alarm systems are the most common these days with many of them having a simple do it yourself installation. Hard wired home alarm systems are still around and still used, however. Wireless home alarm systems are much simpler to install and much easier to maintain.

Finally, there are several things you can add to your home alarm system to make it more efficient. For instance home automation devices like automatics door locks, light switches, and thermostats. Most wireless home alarm systems will use a technology called Z-Wave for home automation. These simple devices can be programmed to work alongside your alarm system, and you can control these devices remotely from your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

In conclusion, a home alarm system can be many things. It can be a life saver, a peace of mind keeper, or a home automation juggernaut.

Configuring A Home Alarm System

It does not take an advanced degree, or any prior knowledge at all, to properly outline and configure a home alarm system. By configure we mean choosing what alarm sensors you will need for your home. Of course, a salesman or consultant from one of the top home alarm system companies can assist you in the configuration, but it’s always good to know what you’re doing so you understand the process.

First, walk around your home a bit to count doors and windows and find any “high traffic” areas in the home. By high traffic areas we mean open spaces of hallways that are funnels in the home, places that people must walk through to pass to other rooms. These areas are primed for a motion sensors which cover areas up to 1,000 square feet.

Next, think about ways you would break in to your own home. It may sound silly, but putting yourself in the intruder’s shoes can give you some perspective on what areas of your home are the most susceptible. Do you have an upstairs window that can be accessed from a roof or deck? Do you have a fire escape? Is the back door lock working correctly? Is the back of the house hidden from view and dark at night? There are many things you can find in and around your home that you may not have noticed.

After you have scoped out your home it’s time to think about which alarm system sensors you will need. Of course, door sensors go on door, so all you need to do is count the doors. Windows work the same way. As for motion sensors, one for each main area is ideal, such as a den, living room, dining room, or basement. If you have large pets or don’t think motion sensors will work well in your home you can always use glass break detectors.

Finally, think about any environmental hazards such as fires or rising water. Perhaps if you have leaky pipes in the basement or often cook you might want to have devices to warn of possible danger.

In the end, configuring a home alarm system doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact most of it is simply common sense. However, knowing a little more before you start talking to alarm companies can go a long way to making your search that much easier.

Moving A Home Alarm System

The newest wireless home alarm system technology allows homeowners and renters to take their home alarm system with them if they move. With new do it yourself home alarm system installations it’s simple to set up a home alarm system and simple to move it. If you tend to move around a lot or maybe you’re a real estate agent who wants an alarm system you can move from home to home moving a home alarm system is a cinch.

Setting up the home alarm system entails plugging in the Control Panel, placing your wireless alarm sensors and contacting the alarm company to have the system activated. Uninstalling your system and moving it is almost the same. First, disarm your alarm system before unplugging the Control Panel or taking down any devices. Next unplug your panel and take down devices. When you get to the new residence simply put your sensors in their new areas. If you need more sensors that you originally had it’s simple to contact the alarm company to purchase more. You may want to plan ahead for this a little, so if you know that your new home has an extra door you may want to call the alarm company a few days before you move so you can have your additional sensor in time.

Lastly, when you get to the new home and have re-installed the components it’s time to contact the alarm system company again to have them “check” the system to make sure it’s working correctly. You will also want to give the alarm company your new address. This way if the home alarm system goes off the monitoring station will send the authorities to the proper address.

I currently have a home alarm system installed. I didn’t find much on here about having an existing alarm system installed and what to do when you want to switch alarm system companies. I might just be looking in the wrong place on your site too, there is a bunch of stuff to read here which has been great. May have overlooked this question.

Hello! The top home alarm companies will certainly be able to work with you. Many of them have options for transferring your alarm system to a new company. It is possible that you will need some pieces of new home alarm system equipment such as a new control panel or certain alarm sensors but the home alarm companies on our list should certainly be able to help.

I am interested only in reliable equipment that I can install myself. I do not wish to sign up for a monitoring service, i.e., a simple siren response to an intrusion is all I want. What system would you recommend?

    •
      AlarmExpert

Hey there Wayne! Thanks for stopping by Alarm System Report.

While we generally recommend monitored home alarm systems for their safety and reliability we realize others many just want something a little simpler. We would suggest looking at SafeMart and reading the SafeMart Security Review here on Alarm System Report. While they do offer monitoring they do have some options for non-monitored alarm systems. Keep in mind you’ll likely pay full price for the alarm system equipment since you won’t be signing up for monthly service.

      Hope this helps! Good luck!

Are there any additional fees I should look out for when shopping for a home alarm system? I see in your home alarm system reviews all of the pricing information but are there any others fees I should be on the look out for? I don’t want to get ‘duped’ into paying for extra things I won’t need or ask for. From what I can tell most of the home alarm system companies listed in these rankings aren’t out to nickel and dime you but just wanted to get your take. Thanks in advance.

      AlarmExpert

Hey there Emma! Thanks for coming by Alarm System Report.

You ask a very good question and one we will likely cover in a future blog post on our alarm system blog!

When shopping for home alarm system you really don’t have to worry too much about additional fees or costs of an alarm system.

The home alarm system pricing should consist of the alarm system equipment cost up-front. You may or may not be asked to pay the first month’s monitoring fee as well. However, most companies will wait until a few weeks or a month to begin charging the monthly fee.

As for other fees from the alarm system company, there shouldn’t be any. If you choose an alarm company that offers a do it yourself alarm system there should be no extra charges for installation or activation.

As for fees not associated with the alarm system company, there is only one we can think of, and that’s an alarm permit fee. This is not the case everywhere, it really depends on what city/town you live in. Some areas require an alarm system permit if you want to have a system installed. This is essentially a way for the local police to know who has alarm systems and who doesn’t, so when calls come in from the monitoring station they can better determine whether or not a false alarm may be occurring among other reasons.

These permits usually run somewhere between $10-$20. Some are one time fees and others areas charge this on a yearly basis. You should contact your local police department or city/town hall to ask about these permits and what may or may not be required.

The home alarm system company should also know whether or not you require a permit, and will likely provide you with the necessary application or form should you require one, however it’s good to do some research on your own just to make sure.

Ultimately, there aren’t many hidden fees with home alarm systems these days. With home alarm system reviews like the ones provided here and all of the information out there today alarm companies have become pretty good about charging customers a fair price and providing quality service with ‘nickle & dime-ing’ its customers.

Thanks again for coming by Emma and good luck!

Really enjoyed these home alarm system reviews. I never knew about any of these alarm companies before I started doing some research online. Glad I found alarm system reviews like this that were easy to understand and provided the information I really needed. Other reviews didn’t even talk about alarm system prices or anything. That’s one of the most important things in my book so was glad to see that focused on. Thanks for the great home alarm reviews.

    Home Alarm Systems

Are there any other fees I should be looking out for with a home alarm system aside from the alarm system equipment fee and monthly monitoring? I know most of these home alarm companies say “no hidden fees” but are there any third party fees or even some from the alarm company I should look for that aren’t listed?

    Ryan

    •
      AlarmExpert

Hey Ryan! Thanks for visiting Alarm System Report. There aren’t a whole lot of “hidden fees” to look out for. Especially not from the home alarm system companies. In fact, we should say there aren’t any. The only things you should look out for when looking at a new home alarm system is something like an alarm system permit fee or something like that. You can contact your local police department or government center to ask if an alarm system permit is required. Even if you do require this, the cost is minimal, averaging about $15 a year for the permit. Other than the only fees you should look for form alarm companies are the alarm system equipment fee and monthly monitoring charge. Thanks for reading our best home alarm system reviews and good luck!

    Top Home Alarm Systems

I have been very impressed with these home alarm systems. The home alarm companies seem to be reputable and provide the service level that is required. I am having trouble figuring out the three and four year alarm contracts though. Why would I sign a contract for that long? It seems to me that a year long contract or even a month to month payment would be more than equitable for the home alarm company and the customer. ALso thanks for providing the home alarm system reviews. Very helpful.

    Sincerely,

    Randy M.

    •
      AlarmExpert

Hi Randy! Thanks for visiting Alarm System Report and thanks for your question. Alarm system contracts can be tough to understand sometimes. We actually have a few posts about this in our Alarm System Blog. The reason you would sign a three or four year agreement is to receive a large discount on the up-front alarm system equipment cost. In exchange for this discount you sign a three or four year agreement and pay a monthly monitoring fee. Of course, you can sign shorter agreement or get a system without monitoring, however, the cost for equipment will be expensive as you’ll be paying full price. Besides, purchasing a home alarm system is often something people do so they can have protection for many years to come. Signing an agreement helps provide the top of the line protection needed without it costing a lot of money. Thanks again Randy!
