Vivint Company Overview
Vivint has been around since 1997 and is based in Provo, Utah. Formerly called APX Alarm, Vivint serves customers throughout the United States and Canada with a number of home security and home automation solutions. Vivint claims to be the nation’s largest home automation provider.
In 2010 Vivint was among the top five security installation and monitoring companies nationwide. The company has faced criticism in the past for poor customer service and aggressive salespeople but in recent years has focused on improving those aspects considerably. Vivint has their own monitoring station and uses 2Gig Security products for their alarm panels and sensors.

Vivint partnered with 2Gig Technologies to provide its customers with the only cellular two-way touchscreen control panel on the market. Vivint calls this technology “Go!Control” and offers an all-in-one home security, home automation and energy management solution.
The Go!Control Panel is a one of kind panel and is likely the best panel in its class boasting an easy to use touchscreen to mange home security and home automation products. The panel can also warn homeowners of sever weather like a tornado.

Surveillance is also offered by Vivint with options for a Fixed Wireless Camera and Pan/Tilt Wireless Camera. Cameras are viewable on your smart phone or online. Z-Wave home automation products are also offered directly by the company including light control, locks and thermostats. Vivint is one of the few companies have door locks and thermostats directly in their equipment offerings.

Vivint Monitoring
Vivint has their own monitoring station and offers cellular alarm monitoring. They have three different packages with three different monthly fees. Each package adds several features and goes along with an up front package of alarm sensors and home automation products. The three packages are:
- Home Security Package: The home security package from Vivint has a cost of $49.99 per month and provides cellular alarm monitoring and web/remote access to your alarm system. The monthly fee includes monitoring for burglary, fire and medical emergencies and includes two way voice capabilities.
- Energy Management Package: The energy management package focuses mainly on managing your homes electronics allowing customers to automate their lights, thermostats, locks and many other home appliances and control them remotely. All devices are accessible online or through mobile access. You can also add security equipment to this package. The price for the energy management package each month is $57.99.
- Home Automation Package: The home automation package from Vivint combines everything the company offers including security, energy management, home automation and surveillance. Web/remote access is also included. The cost for the home automation package is $67.99.
Vivint offers very complete packages with affordable monthly pricing. While their prices are a tad higher than several top competitors the monthly price reflects a small up-front commitment. Vivint is also offering automation products directly to the homeowner rather than going through a third party vendor.
Overall Vivint’s monitoring packages are competitively priced for what you get and Vivint’s Home Automation Package earned a Consumers Digest Best Buy award.

Vivint Up-Front Cost
Vivint offers three packages to choose from up-front that correlate with their monthly monitoring price. The three packages offered by Vivint are:
- Home Security Package: 1 Go!Control Panel, 3 Door/Windows Sensors, 1 Motion Detector, 1 Key Fob, 1 Yard Sign. This package has a $99 activation fee.
- Energy Management: 1 Smart Thermostat, 1 Lamp/Appliance Control, 12 Energy Efficient Lightbulbs. Security products can also be added and depending on your setup some components could be included while others may have an additional cost. The activation fee for the Energy Management Package is $149.
- Home Automation Package: Vivint’s home automation package includes all the components from the Home Security and The Energy Management Packages. It also includes 1 Video Camera and 1 Automatic Door Lock. The activation fee for this package is $199.
The Home Automation package is by far the best value and offers the most for your money. Additional items could come with an additional cost but overall you can’t get this much equipment with this amount of unique features for a better price. Vivint blows the competition away when it comes to providing a good amount equipment in their packages for a great value – although additional equipment can be pricey.

Vivint had a rough go of it in the customer service for some time and has been trying to climb its way back up ever since. The problem is consumers only tend to remember the bad about the company. Vivint used to be called APX Alarm and was rebranded for a reason. Not only because they wanted to become more innovative but because they needed to shed the poor customer service reputation. The company is not accredited by the BBB but has a C+ rating. Companies are not required to apply for accreditation but it is nice when a company is accredited.
Despite years of poor service records Vivint has tried to earn back customer’s trust the last few years and have done a fantastic job. Vivint has taken a new approach to customer service and not only provides customers with outstanding service from sale to installation to activation but also provides phone support and online tutorials of products for customers to use as an ongoing customer.
Vivint has taken many strides forward in the customer service department recently and customers can rest assured the they’ll good get service.
