Alarm System Review:
Positives:latest wireless technology, touchscreen control panel, affordable home automation
Negatives:poor customer service history, alarm equipment manufacturer is new to the industry
Vivint surprised a lot of folks in the home alarm industry when they made a deal with equipment manufacturer 2Gig to provide home security and home automation products. 2Gig boasts an intuitive TouchScreen Control Panel with an abundance of wireless sensors and home automation devices to choose from. Vivint has also changed their pricing structure allowing for more affordable systems.
Vivint Company Overview
Vivint has been around since 1997 and is based in Provo, Utah. Formerly called APX Alarm, Vivint serves customers throughout the United States and Canada with a number of home security and home automation solutions. Vivint claims to be the nation’s largest home automation provider.
In 2010 Vivint was among the top five security installation and monitoring companies nationwide. The company has faced criticism in the past for poor customer service and aggressive salespeople but in recent years has focused on improving those aspects considerably. Vivint has their own monitoring station and uses 2Gig Security products for their alarm panels and sensors.
Vivint partnered with 2Gig Technologies to provide its customers with the only cellular two-way touchscreen control panel on the market. Vivint calls this technology “Go!Control” and offers an all-in-one home security, home automation and energy management solution.
The Go!Control Panel is a one of kind panel and is likely the best panel in its class boasting an easy to use touchscreen to mange home security and home automation products. The panel can also warn homeowners of sever weather like a tornado.
Vivints range of equipment includes:
- Go!Control Two-Way Touchscreen Panel
- Door/Window Sensors
- Motion Detectors
- Recessed Door Sensors
- Glass Break Sensors
- Smoke Alarm
- Key Fob
- Carbon Monoxide Alarm
- Secondary TouchScreen Panel
- Fixed Wireless Camera
- Pan/Tilt Wireless Camera

Vivint’s Go!Control Panel also has two way voice capabilities. A rarity among cellular alarm systems. While a technology that has been phased out with the use of cellphones two way voice is a nice addition. Surveillance is also offered by Vivint with options for a Fixed Wireless Camera and Pan/Tilt Wireless Camera. Cameras are viewable on your smart phone or online. Z-Wave home automation products are also offered directly by the company including light control, locks and thermostats. Vivint is one of the few companies have door locks and thermostats directly in their equipment offerings.
Vivint has their own monitoring station and offers cellular alarm monitoring. They have three different packages with three different monthly fees. Each package adds several features and goes along with an up front package of alarm sensors and home automation products. The three packages are:
- Home Security Package: The home security package from Vivint has a cost of $49.99 per month and provides cellular alarm monitoring and web/remote access to your alarm system. The monthly fee includes monitoring for burglary, fire and medical emergencies and includes two way voice capabilities.
- Energy Management Package: The energy management package focuses mainly on managing your homes electronics allowing customers to automate their lights, thermostats, locks and many other home appliances and control them remotely. All devices are accessible online or through mobile access. You can also add security equipment to this package. The price for the energy management package each month is $57.99.
- Home Automation Package: The home automation package from Vivint combines everything the company offers including security, energy management, home automation and surveillance. Web/remote access is also included. The cost for the home automation package is $67.99.
Vivint offers very complete packages with affordable monthly pricing. While their prices are a tad higher than several top competitors the monthly price reflects a small up-front commitment. Vivint is also offering automation products directly to the homeowner rather than going through a third party vendor.
Overall Vivint’s monitoring packages are competitively priced for what you get and Vivint’s Home Automation Package earned a Consumers Digest Best Buy award.

Vivint Home Automation
Vivint is the king when it comes to home automation. Offering alarm packages that are specifically designed to provide home automation is unheard of in the alarm industry. Many companies are now offering home automation products as part of their offerings but aren’t providing nearly as many devices – making Vivint tops in this category.
Vivint offers Z-Wave thermostats, light controls and door locks and allows customers to purchase the home automation devices directly from Vivint.
Vivint provides professionally installed alarm systems and with the amount of devices and possible labor involved is best for this type of setup. Vivint’s installation of alarm sensors, home automation & energy management, and surveillance products are for the homeowner looking to take care of everything in one fell swoop.
Cameras will require internet access and the Go!Control Panel will be mounted on the wall along with any other keypad. The alarm sensors are wireless and the cellular communicator is already installed in the Go!Control Panel. Vivint installation should be quick and painless and many folks have been happy with the results.
Vivint Customer Service
Vivint had a rough go of it in the customer service for some time and has been trying to climb its way back up ever since. The problem is consumers only tend to remember the bad about the company. Vivint used to be called APX Alarm and was rebranded for a reason. Not only because they wanted to become more innovative but because they needed to shed the poor customer service reputation. The company is not accredited by the BBB but has a C+ rating. Companies are not required to apply for accreditation but it is nice when a company is accredited.
Despite years of poor service records Vivint has tried to earn back customer’s trust the last few years and have done a fantastic job. Vivint has taken a new approach to customer service and not only provides customers with outstanding service from sale to installation to activation but also provides phone support and online tutorials of products for customers to use as an ongoing customer.
Vivint has taken many strides forward in the customer service department recently and customers can rest assured the they’ll good get service.
Vivint offers an array of equipment including home security, home automation & energy management as well as surveillance and home automation. Vivint is one of few companies that offers all home automation products including thermostats and door locks.
Very few companies offer the amount of equipment for such a great value that Vivint does. Customers have to pay a little higher cost per month but its a give and take situation. Over the course of a few years the prices basically even out with many other companies as well.
Overall Vivint is a great option for home security and specializes in home automation and energy efficiency – even beginning to offer solar panel installations in homes. Some customers may be weary of the poor service history but Vivint is an up and coming player in the home alarm industry and a company to watch out for.
